One More Thing to Feel Guilty About...
You're not going to believe where this is going. Ready? Do you have a guilt complex about...not finishing a book? This is a big deal in the publishing business. The publishing industry wants to know more about what people are reading and how they read. Do they put a book down and then pick it back up or do they just abandon books willy nilly or do people, on the whole, pick up a book and read it in its entirety? They're getting the majority of their data from e-readers. Each time you sync your Kindle, Nook or whatever, the provider is able to "see" what you've been doing with a book. The Best Mother's Day Gifts Ever; Courtesy of Saturday Night Live
If you do a search on my blog, you'll see that I posted a blog entitled Fifty Shades of Grey and Trickle Down Economics. Well, here's another example of that. It seems the phenom has not quieted down over those books. They're now out in special editions and hardback sets. No news yet on who might play the characters but there's speculation all over the web. So you know Saturday Night Live had to flick a whip at the craziness and for Mother's Day at that... Enjoy:

Gray Eyes...Oh My...

In a humdrum moment of pure laziness, my mind wandered and began to contemplate the eyes of both Christian Grey and Gideon Cross. Not an unpleasant way to laze away the time. Authors these days, particularly the hot sex, rom/dom/sub types, have their protagonists with unusual hair and eye color combinations. In Fifty Shades of Grey, Christian has copper colored hair with gray eyes whilst Ana has auburn hair with blue eyes. In the Crossfire series, Gideon has black hair with blue eyes and Eva has blond hair with gray eyes. I agree that black hair and blue eyes as well as auburn hair with blues eyes may not be that unusual. But what's with the gray eye thing? So I let my mind go all stream of consciousness a la James Joyce. (OMG, in college I took one whole course on his writings. Other than the penis floating in the water like a flower, that's about all I remember.) What is so important about the eyes, other than for seeing? Well, according to a Yiddish proverb, "the eyes are the mirror to the soul". I found some interesting useless info but hey, I'm satisfying my curiosity, right? Read more...

When Bared to You came out, it sold 80,000 paperbacks in the UK in the first week alone. More than Fifty Shades did. And when Reflected in You came out, it sold 82,000 copies in the UK. Will I Always Remember Christian and Ana? Depends...

Hah! Suckered you in! This is a blog on memory. Although I must say that I will probably always remember Fifty Shades 
as well as I remember reading my first "adult" fiction at the tender age of 13. And I do remember it, The Golden Hawk by Frank Yerby. It was one of those bodice rippers with the hunky sea captain thing going on. Forward (didn't I just see that word used in some campaign? How soon we forget.) then to the topic. On Feb. 22 of this year, I wrote a blog entitled: Every memory soon becomes fiction. It's a quote from Ernest Hemingway. I found this article in the Huffington Post and I thought I'd pass it on because so many of us baby boomers are worried about Alzheimer's. We'll walk from one room to the next with a purpose to do so and by the time we get to the other room...realize we have forgotten that purpose. Not to worry. There's a reason for it and many of the other worrisome memory lapses we might have. Hopefully this will relieve you of some of your anxiety. Read more...

A Dessert For Christian and Ana: Fifty Shades of Grey Sex Bars
A girlfriend of mine made these for a party I recently had. She called them Better Than Sex Bars. I'll call them Fifty Shades of Grey Sex Bars in honor of Christian and Ana. Knowing Christian's penchant for kinky f*ckery, he may do a few things kinky with whatever left over peanut butter or butter or other ingredients he may have. I don't believe either of them would agree with my girlfriend's premise that these are better than sex. But they certainly are decadent with a touch of eroticism in them. When Spousal Preferences Don't Align

A heady topic that could lead to just about anywhere. But here's what I'm talking about. There's an article in every Saturday Wall Street Journal by Dan Ariely. He tries to find answers to peoples "dilemmas". One of the questions asked of Dan was, "My husband and I are childless...each day he comes home and says 'What do you want to do tonight?' We've tried every restaurant within a 5 mile radius. Neither of us enjoys shopping or watching movies at a theater. His hobby is aviation and I don't fly...we usually end up watching TV and we don't even like TV. Can you shed some light on our problem?"
Dan's answer was basically something my husband and I did with a group of friends many years ago. We had a core of 3 couples. Each time someone asked, well, what are we doing this weekend? No one could agree on what to do. Inevitably someone would say, I don't want to do that. Here's what Dan recommended to the couple and then I'll follow with what we did as the three couples. I think Ronald Reagan is turning over in his grave. The Fifty Shades Trilogy has caused an explosion (oh my) in a very niche industry. It's as if the readers are submissives being led into the cavernous maw of capitalism and to the ever intrepid entrepreneur. Many individuals and businesses are finding ways to lubricate their pockets with money by cashing in on the phenomena of the Fifty Shades trilogy. The trilogy has made $20 million in the US and $31 million worldwide.

Kinky F**kery: My Book Review on The Fifty Shades Trilogy

I was at my allergist’s office waiting for the time to pass after I had gotten my allergy shots. Since I was getting ready to go on vacation and looking for something to download for the long flights, I noticed another patient reading her e-book. I asked her what she was reading and she blushed. She said, “You’re going to think I’m silly but I’m reading the Fifty Shades Trilogy.” Now I had heard of the Trilogy and knew it had something to do with bondage. OK, a little light reading for the trip. I downloaded the first book and finished it within 2 days and then realized that I hadn’t downloaded the other two! Where can I find a Wi-Fi to connect to?!!! AHHHHH! Many of my friends have read the books and mostly it’s, “oh my.” And that will normally be accompanied by a huge blush.
So here’s the deal. E.L. James, a British mother of two read the Twilight series and saw the movies. She basically said “wow”. I want to do something like that but for adults. She began writing the book and publishing it on fan-published erotica sites. It became such an online phenomena that an Australian publisher won a bidding war to get them published and now Universal pictures has picked up the rights for $5 million and E.L. has script and casting approval. That’s something Stephanie Meyer didn’t even have. There is one book sold every second. Why have these books started such a craze? Well, in the US the books are being called “mom porn.” I guess that means that there are a lot of lusty housewives out there looking for something “different”. The basic premise is this: 21 year old, gawky, technophobic, Anastasia Steele meets 27 year old uber rich, extremely handsome, standoffish, domineering Christian Grey. We are repeatedly told about his stunning grey eyes, his stunning physique and his wavy thick hair. Oh my. But little is actually said about Ana’s looks except that she has long brown hair, she’s pale and has blue eyes too big for her face. So what does Christian see in Ana that enthralls him? You see he’s into BDSM, bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism. Christian has a bleak and dark past and when he was 15 he was seduced by an older lady who brought him into the BDSM world. He has no clue about having “vanilla” sex. He sees Ana as a submissive and wants her to become part of his world. Now, when E.L. was asked on 20/20 about is it appropriate to portray a young woman as a submissive she replied,” Well, women take control all day…they go to work, they care for the kids, they cook, they clean…it’s nice to every once in awhile give control over to someone else.” Many reviews have been written criticizing the novels on this level. The only thing I could say is that James could have made Grey and Anastasia older. Anastasia being 21 AND a virgin keep niggling at the back of my brain. She’s not a virgin for long…But other reviews have said that the book has great overtones about learning to compromise, that when it comes to sexuality there needs to be an openness between partners as to what is, as Christian would say, a “soft limit and a hard limit.” On a basic level (really basic) it’s about the evolving dynamics of two people falling (possibly) in love.
The writing is really, really bad. James admits this. She repeats herself time after time: Oh my, kinky f***kery, holy cr*p, Ana constantly biting her lower lip, her inner goddess is always doing back flips and his flashing grey eyes. It seems she gets erotically charged every time Christian comes around (OK, that’s loaded with some double entendres). And how many times can he grab a fist full of her hair and pull her head back?
So why then read the books? It’s purely guilty pleasures. A woman’s sexuality is awakened by a very experienced man (who has a Red Room of Pain). You get to follow their sexual exploits (with kinky f**kery) as well as their developing relationship. Plus there are some side stories of some interest. But the story is all Ana and Christian’s.
Buy or download Fifty Shades of Grey and see if it’s for you. It’s definitely not hard core but even if a little BDSM is too much for you, don't waste your money. Fifty Shades of Grey introduces you to Ana and Christian and their push and pull (OK stop with that) relationship. Fifty Shades Darker leads you to why Christian is the way he is and his learning to compromise and Fifty Shades Freed gives you the climax (stop that!) to the story. James wraps the last book up nicely by ending with Christian (in real time) experiencing his first meeting with Ana. That is where you learn what she really looks like and why he becomes entranced by her. (Jamie Dornan will play Christian and Dakota Johnson, Ana.)
Final take: I thoroughly enjoyed all three books. If the movie studios follow the books, the movies will have to be NC 17. And the big question is…who will play Christian and who will play Ana? James wants unknowns and I tend to agree with her.
